Am I at risk for lung cancer?

That depends— are you a current or former cigarette smoker who has quit within the last 15 years?

Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and secondhand smoke can also increase a person’s risk. The risk of lung cancer for smokers is higher than for non-smokers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who smoke cigarettes are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke.

MONTCLAIR, NJ - October 22, 2019 -- The Cancer Center at Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center has established an affiliate agreement with John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of only 16 cancer center consortia in the U.S. approved by the National Cancer Institute, a partnership that will enhance care in North Jersey.

Mountainside Nurse Donates Her Kidney to Give a Stranger a Second Chance at Life

Every year there are around 6,000 kidney transplants performed in the United States. As wonderful as that number is, there are still 93,000 people waiting on a kidney, either from a deceased individual or a living donor. Jean Sime of Wayne, New Jersey was one of those thousands waiting on a new kidney.

Jean had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2013 and started dialysis two years later. For three and a half hours several days a week, Jean came to either Mountainside Medical Center or a dialysis treatment center and relied on a machine to do what her kidneys couldn’t.

Premature / Early Menopause is a Curveball to Your Health

Around the time the candles on the 50^th birthday cake are blown out, women can expect to soon go through menopause. This is a natural stage in life that every woman shares. However, for some women, that stage can come earlier than expected. In the United States 5% of women will go through early menopause and 1% through premature menopause.

Early menopause is when you reach this stage before the age of 45. Premature menopause is before the age of 40. In both cases women having gone through early or premature menopause cannot get pregnant.

Dr. Robert Montemurro has been serving the community since 1994. He received his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed his residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

The New Radial Lounge at Mountainside Medical Center

Cardiac catheterization has come a long way over the past several decades, making surgeries safer, faster, and with techniques that drastically reduce recovery time and improve overall patient experience. One way this has been accomplished is radial access. Radial access is when a radial artery in the wrist is used as the entry point for the catheter, as opposed to an entry point in the leg or groin. This type of surgery has been performed at Mountainside Medical Center well over 1,100 times since 2014. Now there is even more to help patients with the opening of the Radial Lounge.
