The ABC's of a Healthy Breakfast

Benefits of Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It kick-starts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day.  It gives you the energy you need to get things done and to help you focus at work or at school.  Skipping breakfast may lead to overeating at lunchtime, with the selection of fast, unhealthy food options.

Basics of a Healthy Breakfast

Pair carbohydrates with proteins.  The carbs give your body energy and gives your brain the fuel it needs to take on the day.  Protein gives you the staying power and helps you feel full until your next meal.

Choose whole grain cereals and breads and lean protein such as eggs, lean meat, legumes and nuts, and Greek yogurt.  A healthy breakfast does not have to be “traditional” breakfast fare.  Healthy breakfast options may include the following:

  • Cooked oatmeal topped with almonds, dried cranberries and cinnamon
  • A whole wheat pita stuffed with hard-boiled eggs and a vegetable such as spinach
  • A whole-wheat tortilla filled with veggies, low fat shredded cheese and salsa
  • A smoothie of fruits, plain yogurt and a spoonful of wheat germ

Keep in mind, breakfast doesn’t have to be time-consuming to be healthy.  Figure out what you will eat for breakfast the night before and have it ready for the morning.  Keep the breakfast basics in mind and set yourself up for healthier eating all day long!
