Palliative Care

Palliative care is a medical specialty that is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and can be provided along with curative treatment.

Mountainside Medical Center's Palliative Care program is dedicated to providing patients with relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

The Palliative Care team works collaboratively with the patient, their surrogate decision maker, attending physician, case management, and other specialists as appropriate to develop patient-focused and family-centered treatment plan which:

  • Optimizes pain and symptom control through evidenced based practice
  • Optimizes functional status when appropriate
  • Endorses the highest quality of life for the patient and family
  • Provides physical, psychological, social, and spiritual support to patient and family
  • Clarifies immediate and long-term goals of care and promotes advance care planning
  • Promotes appropriate referrals to other care types and settings timely
