Volunteer

Make a positive difference

Volunteers play a vital role at Mountainside Medical Center (MMC) by supporting the hospital’s professional healthcare teams and helping us enhance the patient experience. In fact, volunteers enable us to truly serve as a community hospital where local residents receive world-class care in a convenient location that reflects the spirit of their community.

When you join our MMC volunteer family you become part of a dynamic team who truly touches the lives of patients, families, visitors, and staff. By contributing both your time and talent, you’ll help others, meet new people and learn new skills. While this is a very rewarding experience, it also requires a significant commitment--both in terms of service hours and the prerequisites that must be met as part of our process.

We offer volunteer programs for both adults and teens.

Our volunteer program

A diverse group of volunteers ranging from high school and college students to working professionals and retirees bring an array of talents and skills to their volunteer experience. For example, some choose to knit hats and blankets for infants born at the hospital from the comfort of their own homes while others perform a variety of services on-site at our campus.

Using a comprehensive application process, we pair our volunteers with positions that best match their abilities and suit their availability. This initial process can take up to four weeks for completion.

What our volunteers do

These are just a few of the tasks our volunteers perform that help us at Mountainside Medical Center:

  • Greeting patients and visitors
  • Patient escort and transport
  • Delivering mail and/or newspapers throughout the hospital
  • Clerical reception and assistance
  • Assisting in administrative departments such as Accounting, IT, Human Resources.
  • Assisting patients and staff in nursing units

Applications from men and women (age 18 and above) who wish to volunteer are accepted year round. We greatly value adult volunteers who can remain with us long-term and maintain a dependable schedule. Placements are typically based upon a consistent schedule with a four-hour shift each week. New volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of 100 hours each year.

The junior program is for high school students (ages 16 or older). While applications are accepted year round, specific deadlines must be met to begin volunteering for either the summer or winter session. Applications for the winter program (beginning January each year) may be submitted from September through October. Applications for the summer program (beginning the last week of June each year) may be submitted by March 31st.

In addition to playing a vital role at Mountainside Medical Center, volunteers also receive many benefits: You will meet new people and make new friends, gain new knowledge and learn new skills, and most of all, receive the satisfaction that comes from being needed and helping others. You become an important member of our team here at Mountainside Medical Center and volunteering here offers you the opportunity to experience a world-class healthcare setting. For our junior volunteers, having a background in volunteer services can also be beneficial when you are applying for education or employment opportunities.

Yes! We almost always need qualified and committed volunteers. However, there are certain times of the year when our program reaches capacity and we cannot accept new applications at those times.

While volunteering is a great way to enhance your resume, it may not increase your chance of employment at Mountainside Medical Center. If you are seeking employment, please go to our website at: https://jobs.ardenthealth.com/careers.

The minimum time commitment is four hours per week with an annual minimum of 100 hours. You must be able to commit to volunteering on a weekly basis before any letter of recommendation will be provided.

Most volunteer assignments fall during regular business hours, M-F, 9am to 5pm. You may inquire about opportunities outside of regular business hours.

We listen carefully to prospective volunteers' interests and goals during the interview process and make every effort to place them in positions that will be interesting to them and applicable to their special talents or skill set, while still meeting the needs of the hospital. Every effort is made to place a volunteer in their preferred area, but it is not always possible.

Yes, a professional, groomed appearance is required for all volunteers at all times. The dress code will be reviewed in detail during orientation.
