Breast Feeding Support Program

Mountainside Medical Center is a leading breastfeeding proponent among New Jersey hospitals

Breast milk is the optimal nutrition for newborns and research has demonstrated that properly designed and implemented breastfeeding policies in hospitals lead to improved infant health. That's why we’re committed to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding.

According to a study by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Department of Health and Senior Services, a high percentage of infants born at Mountainside Medical Center are being exclusively breastfed upon discharge.

Our program is so successful because it was established by RNs and certified lactation consultants with over 50 years of collective experience working with mothers and their newborns.

At Mountainside Medical Center, breastfeeding assistance is offered to mothers as soon after delivery as possible - usually within the first hour or hour and a half. Also:

  • A individual plan is devised for each new mother
  • After discharge, mothers are encouraged to call us with any questions
  • A free breastfeeding support group meets weekly (Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the OB Solarium)
